W.E. Kidner commissioned a transcription of the Spaxton Parish Registers in 1954 from Rev. Guy Graham. then Rector of Spaxton, who wrote "...the Archivist whom I employed could not immediately tackle the search, which he found to be most difficult owing to the eroded state of the Registers and from the fact that he had to pore over the parchment with a powerful magnifying glass.... The register covering the period requested [1558-1630] unfortunately is very worn, and for several years badly mutilated, whilst many entries are eroded and indecipherable."
Mrs Nancy Mead of Wellington, Somerset, tackled the registers in 1991, and was able to make some corrections and additions to the earlier attempt. The lists below show the distilled results, while the differences illustrate the need to treat with a certain scepticism even parish register transcriptions.
Martin Southwood has published transcriptions of many west Somerset parish registers, and I owe him and his team many thanks.
