Appendix 15 - Kitnors of Wootton Courtney, Luccombe,
and Luxborough, 15th to 20th century

1. Richard Kyttner of Wootten Courtney

On 1st June 1537, Richard Kyttner gave evidence in a Star Chamber case, Wylles v. Doble; from his evidence it appears he was born in 1480.

His will, made at Wootton Courtney, was proved in 1548

Margaret Kitnor, widow of Wutton Courtney, whose will was proved in 1562, was perhaps his wife.

2. Richard Chebott of Luccombe

In 1559 Richard Chebott was occupying a tenement in Luccombe, held of George Harrison and after George's death, of William Harrison, his son.

The will of Richard Kitnor of Luccombe was proved in 1562

3. John Kitner of Wotton Courtney

In the 1569 muster of the Somerset Militia, John Kitner in the tithing of Wotton Cortney found "one pair of almain rivets furnished"; he was probably overage for active service, ie over 46; William Kitner was mustered in the tithing of of Luxborough as an ableman, archer.

4. Agnes Kitnor of Wootton Courtney

The will of Agnes Kitnor, widow, of Wootton Courtney was proved in 1635.

5. William Kitnor of Luccombe

In 1641 William Kitnor of Luccombe signed the protest against popery.

6. Margaret Kitner, widow of Wootton Courtney

On 28th October 1662, Margaret Kitner, widow of Wootton Courtney tithing contributed 1/- to the Benevolence granted to Charles II. In 1664/65 she paid hearth tax at 2/- in Wootton Courtney.

7. Michael Kidner of Wootton Courtney

The will of Michael Kitner of Wootton Courtney was calendared in 1693.

8. John Kidner of Wootton Courtney

On 25th November 1677 a licence for the marriage of John Kidner and Joane Wescot, widow, both of Wootton Courtney, at Wootton Courtney or Exford, was given by the Bishop of Bath and Wells.

9. John Kitnor, alias Chebbert, and Joane Kitner, alias Chibbett

The wills of John Kitnor, alias Chebbert, and of Joane Kitner, alias Chibbett, both of Wootton Courtney, were proved in 1700 and 1707 respectively.

10. Thomas Chibbett of Luccombe

In 1727 the "church house" at Luccombe was leased to THomas Chibbett at a guinea a year for seven years.

11. Hannah Kidner of Wootton Courtney

In 1778 the will of Hannah Kidner of Wootton Courtney was proved.

12. John and Mary Ann Ketnor, of Bath

1851 census records John, bootmaker, born in Luccombe and aged 28 (b. c. 1823), living with wife Mary Ann, born Bath c. 1825, living at St James's Parade, Bath. The GRO records that he was married in Bath in Q4 1848 to either Mary Ann Cogswell or Mary Ann Hayward (certificate needed, v. 11 p. 2).

13. John Ketnor, cordwainer, of Luccombe

1841 census at Luccombe (HO 107/936/6/7 p.8):

John, 45, Shoemaker; Mary, 45; John, 20; Thomas, 18; Fanny, 17; William, 15; Jane, 13; Robert, 11; and Lucy, 9.

1851 census at Luccombe (HO 107/1920/55 p.20):

John Ketnor , Head, 56, cordwainer, born Luccombe; Mary Ketnor, wife,60, born Fremington, Devon; Sons Thomas, 26, William, 25 and Robert, 23 - all cordwainers; and daughter Lucy, aged 19.

1861 census: 31 acres employing 1 man

15. Robert Ketnor, grocer, of Luccombe

1891 census, aged 61, with his wife Sarah, (b. Cutcombe) aged 56. Niece Conny Ketnor, born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, is a visitor.

In May 1894 Robert Ketner was a member of the Luccombe Church Restoration Committee. (Source: History of Part of West Somerset, p. 154.)

In 1901 census, Robert, 71, Sarah, 66 and Connie (still visiting), shop assistant, 17, are recorded.
